Lake Shirakoma

Lake Shirakoma

About the lake

Lake Shirakoma reveals various faces each season in the primeval forest of the North Yatsugatake Mountains over 2,100m in altitude.
It is only a fifteen-minute walk from the parking lot on Route 299 to the lake. However, your eyes will be captivated by the mysterious landscape, once you put your feet in the forest. From the trails you can see Kokenomori (Moss Forest) spreading like a green carpet. This area, designated as a National Bryophyte Heritage Site by the Bryological Society of Japan, has approximately 500 kinds of moss, maintaining the rich nature as it used to be.
Lake Shirakoma is known by trekkers as an entrance to the mountains including Yatsugatake Mountains. There is a trail around the lake, which provide an easy walk around the lake in 40 minutes.
The lake became famous because of a TV commercial featuring Sayuri Yoshinaga, and is attracting attention of many people who are eager to experience “another world.”
